Sergeant

Harry Garth

Hunter

Kendal Division

The death took place at 30 Aynam Road, Kendal, on Monday, of  Captain Harry Garth Hunter, aged 52, who was a native of Kendal, and the eldest son of the late Mr. Joseph Hunter, saddler. In his younger days he was associated with his father in the business. He was a sergeant in the bearer section of the old Volunteers, and on the outbreak of the Boer  war and was accepted for active service with the St. John Ambulance Brigade, of which he was one of the original members in Kendal. On his return from South Africa, he set up a wholesale saddlery business on the New Road, which he carried on for about twelve years. He was Lieutenant Quartermaster of the local Territorials when the Great War broke out, and went to France to No.34 C.C.S., where he became Captain Quartermaster. On his return to Kendal, he aquired
a position as assistant sanitary inspector for South Westmorland. He had been ill for six weeks from pernicious anaemia, from Which he died on Monday. The interment was made in the Parkside Cemetery on Thursday, the Rev.E.H.E.Bowers
officiating. Local Territorials acted as bearers, and on the coffin, which was draped with the Union Jack, were the sword, cap and medals of Capt.Hunter. Territorial buglers sounded the "Last Post". Kendal Corporation was represented by Mr. G. Jackson, the old Volunteers by Messrs. A.Leighton, M.Graham, and B.B.Banks, the Kendal St. John Ambulance Assocaiation by Supt. Wright, and the C.C.S. by Messrs. Leighton and Clarke. Westmorland Gazette February 20th 1926

G

Peat

Welbeck Division

George Peat was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, on 20 July 1874 and was a long serving member of the Welbeck Division of the St John Ambulance Brigade when he volunteered to serve (for 6 months) in South Africa during the Boer War with the Portland Field Hospital. The Portland Field Hospital (160 beds) was raised by subscription for the Boer War, with the Duke of Portland contributing £5,000 to the almost £14,000 raised (the Duke of Portland’s ancestral seat was Welbeck Abbey, and so presumably the hospital drew most of its staff from the Welbeck Division of the SJAB). The medical staff and orderlies, with full supplies, left England on 13 December 1899 and on their arrival at the Cape no time was lost in commencing operations at Rondebosch. Here they remained for three months, after which the hospital was removed to Bloemfontein, its existence coming to an end in July 1900. In total some 1,009 officers and men were treated by the Hospital, with Peat serving as Deputy Superintendent of the hospital. Interestingly, although his Queen’s South Africa Medal gives his rank as Staff Sergeant with the R.A.M.C. he never attested into the Army.

On returning from South Africa Peat gained employment as Clerk in charge of Stores, and he may have served with the Territorials in the RAMC post Boer War as his Great War enlistment papers record he was part of the Nottinghamshire National Reserve and wished to re-enlist. Whilst he was over age (40), he was accepted as a Private on 15 January 1915, being rapidly promoted to Sergeant. He served during the Great War on the Western Front from 5 June 1915 where he was hospitalised several times (including malaria) and sent to Birmingham Hospital on 12 August 1917, suffering from neurasthenia which resulted in his medical discharge on 27 February 1918. He was awarded a Silver War Badge, no. 370,475. He died in Southport, Lancashire, in January 1949.

Arthur was awarded the St. John Ambulance Brigade Medal for South Africa. There is an inscription on the edge of the medal that says, “334 PTE. A.J. MORRIS ISLE-OF-WIGHT CORPS”. He also received the Queen’s South Africa Medal with five clasps for Belfast, Natal, Transvaal, Orange Free State, and Cape Colony. There is an inscription on the edge that says, “2ND GDE: ORD: A.J. MORRIS. VAN ALEN AMERICAN HOSP.” The ribbons are still attached to the medals but they are a little frayed.

Queen’s South Africa medal (397 ORDLY: A. Okins, ST JOHN AMB: BDE:) with shadow ghost dates official impressed. St. John Ambulance Brigade medal for South Africa (397. Pte. A. Okins. WELLINGBOROUGH CORPS.). The roll confirms Okins as under regimental number 397 and roll number 905. As a member of the suburb of Rushden branch in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire he served in South Africa in Natal with 7 General Hospital. The roll also shows that in October 1904 the clasp Natal was issued to the recipient, on inspection, one can see this was never attached to the medal. The St. John medal having been silvered a common practice at the time often done by Spink, when the recipient sought to show off a uniformed set of awards. Just a hint of rim contact to last otherwise G.V.F. Scarce. Photograph courtesy of Bostock Medals Mar 2011.

...."Mr. Thomas Schofield left Helmshore on May 12th of the present year, and sailed on board the Britannic on May 23rd, arriving at Capetown on June 10th. After spending some time at Green Point Common Camp, he journeyed to Nauwpoort, and from thence to Johannesburg, passing through Bloemfontein, where the party had to stop for a week on account of communications having been cut by De Wet. After proceeding to Johannesburg, Schofield stayed at that place until October 22nd, and whilst there was laid up in hospital for three weeks with influenza."

Pearson

Australian War Memorial. Awarded to Anthony Pearson for his service in the Boer War. He travelled to South Africa as part of the 1800 strong St John Ambulance Brigade that was raised in England to assist the over-stretched resources of the British army's Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) and the associated colonial medical units. Pearson was one of fourteen men who volunteered to serve in the Brigade from the St John Ambulance Preston Corps in Lancashire. He decided to transfer to the RAMC when he reached South Africa and was assigned the service number 16596 and given the rank of private. Pearson returned to England and subsequently emigrated to Australia in 1912. He died in 1962.
