DEATH OF AN AMBULANCE VOLUNTEER. - We regret to announce the death, from pneumonia, on July 17th, of Private Albert Farrow, of Earl's Barton. The young man, who was about 20 years of age, was the last Ambulance Volunteer from Earl's Barton and set sail from Southampton on board the Rosslyn Castle on the 6th of February last. The last letter he wrote to his parents was dated July 5th. It was of a very cheerful character, and the young man was then on the steamship Pinemoor, returning home. The letter was received on Saturday, and on the same morning news was recorded of his death in the daily papers. The letter contained no reference to any illness, and it is assumed that he was in good health when it was written. On Saturday morning Superintendent Perry telegraphed to the War Office, and receiving a reply in the affirmative, he wired the sad intelligence to Superintendent Thorpe. The deceased was much respected, and was a general favourite with all who were brought into contact with him. Much sympathy is felt with his parents in their sad loss. Previous to this all Volunteers, Ambulance men, Regulars, and Reserves from Earl's Barton, the number being nearly 40, have escaped unhurt.
A memorial service was held in the Parish Church on Monday evening in memory of Private Albert Farrow, and was largely attended, many of the villagers turning out as an expression of sympathy with the deceased and the bereaved parents and family. An imposing procession was formed at the Board Schools, which was headed by the Old Silver Band (who kindly volunteered their services), the band playing appropriate music en route to the church. A number of the St. John Ambulance Brigade from Northampton were present. Among the Northampton contingent were Supt. Reeves, Supt. Wilkinson, Lady Supt. Perry, First Nursing Officer Reeves, Sergeants Lloyd and Bettles, and Mr. H. T. Fracy, hon. secretary of the centre. The Earl's Barton division turned up in large numbers, also the Nursing Sisters, the officers present being Supt. Thorpe, Sergeants F. W. Austin, L. Austin, P. Matthews, C. W. Bradford, and Lady Supt. A. Willis. The medical instructor to the Earl's Barton division was also present, in addition to the father and mother and other members of the family. The factory where the deceased was employed was well represented, Messrs. White Bros. and the greater part of the indoor employees being present. On reaching the church the singing was led by the band, Mr. William Sheffield presiding at the organ. The service was conducted by the Rev. R. R. Cobbold, the major portion of the service being taken from the Burial Service. Several hymns were intersperses, these being "When our heads are bowed with woe," "With the sweet word of peace," and "Days and moments quickly flying." At the commencement of the service the Vicar gave a very suitable address, in which he said it was meet that they should hold a memorial service in the House of God where the deceased had so regularly been one of the worshippers. He based his address on St. John xii., 24, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone; but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit." He said as it was one of the laws of nature so it was in human life. The deceased had given his life for the good of his fellow-men: some fruit was sure to come from it. He went out with the resolve to do good to his fellow-men, and the preacher exhorted his congregation to makes their lives less selfish; it would then bear fruit in the village. In speaking to the relatives of the deceased, he said that the sympathy of the village and the members of the St. John Ambulance was manifest by the large numbers present. At the close of the service the procession re-formed, and to the solemn music of the band (conductor Mr. J. Fidler), marched back to the house of the parents of the deceased. Before disbanding, Supt. Thorpe said that Chief Supt. Perry had expressed deep regret at being unable to be present, but he was prevented by something over which he had no control. He thanked the members for attending in such large numbers.
(The Northampton Mercury, Friday 2nd August 1901)

PRESENTATION. - The Northampton centre of the St. John Ambulance have kindly presented a framed address to the parents, as the next of kin to Private Albert Farrow, the Ambulance Volunteer whose sad death took place at sea on July 17th, on his homeward bound journey. The address (which was suitably framed) was the same as those presented to the Ambulance Volunteers on their return from South Africa at the Northampton Town Hall some time back. Mr. H. T. Fracy, hon. secretary of the Northampton centre, came over to Earl's Barton, and together with Superintendent Thorpe and Dr.Lawrence, of the Earl's Barton Division, made the presentation to the parents, who were deeply touched to receive it, and by whom the address will be greatly prized.
(The Northampton Mercury, Friday 6th September 1901)

PARISH CHURCH. - On Sunday afternoon a special service was held in the Parish Church, for the purpose of unveiling a memorial window to the late Mr. Edward Thornton and Miss E. Thornton and also for the dedication of a memorial tablet to Private A. Farrow, St. John Ambulance Brigade (Earl's Barton Division). The preliminary parts of the service were conducted by the Vicar (Rev. R. R. Cobbold), and an excellent address was delivered by the Rev. t. Richards, Rural Dean, on the good and disinterested work done by the late Mr. E. Thornton, of his very liberal and munificent gifts, of the purity and simplicity of his character; in fact, the speaker considered him to be one of the best men of the last century. The memorial tablet, which is of marble and placed near the font, to the left on entering by the porch door, bears the following inscription: - "In memory of Private Albert Farrow, of the Earl's Barton Division, St. John Ambulance Brigade, aged 21 years, who died on his homeward voyage in H.M. transport Pinemore, on July 17th, 1901, after serving as a St. John Hospital orderly in the British Army during the war in South Africa. This tablet is erected by his comrades and friends as a mark of their affection and regard. January, 1902." The members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade (Earl's Barton Division) attended the service, there being present: Supt. Thorpe, Sergeants L. Austin, W. F. Austin, and F. Matthews, Inspector C. Bradford, and about 20 men, and Dr. Lawrence.

Edward houghton

Died 17th of June 1900 at Bloemfontein of Enteric Fever aged 21 years.

walton-le-dale division

DEATH OF A HIGHER WALTON AMBULANCE MAN.—News of the death of Mr. E. Houghton, junr., at Bloemfontein, on the 17th inst., was received in Walton-le-Dale during the past week with much regret. Deceased, who was a clerk in Messrs. G. and R. Dewhurst's Higher Walton Mill, was a member of the Walton-le-Dale Division of the St. John Ambulance Association, and early in January when the second call came upon the division, he, along with John Wm. Gorst, another workman at Messrs. Dewhurst's mill, obeyed the summons, and after a short day in London left for South Africa on January 27th. He was first stationed at De Aar, and afterwards at Bloemfontein. It was at the latter place that he contracted the dreaded enteric fever, and died on the 17th inst. Like many others, he gave his life for the sake of others, and Walton-le-Dale will cherish his memory. He was the son of Mr. E. Houghton, a member of the Walton-le-Dale Urban Council, and was exceedingly well-known in the district. At a meeting of the Walton-le-Dale Division of the St. John Ambulance Association on Thursday, a vote of condolence was passed with the parents of deceased in the great loss they had sustained. Whilst stationed at De Aar, an interesting and unexpected meeting of four Walton-le-Dalers took place. Relieved from duty, the late Private E. Houghton one day took a walk to the station, a distance of about 20 yards, taking with him his camera. Accidentally he caught sight of William Higginson, son of Mr. T. Higginson, of Bamber Bridge, who went out with the Lancashire Hussars' Yeomanry. Higginson was busy attending to his saddle, and when asked where he came from said "Lancashire." "Anywhere near Preston?" further questioned Houghton. "Well, about three miles off," replied Higginson, still unconscious of who his questioner was. The climax was reached, however, when the Yeoman was asked if he would not speak to a body because he was in South Africa. Private J. W. Gorst also came across Private Sep. Darwen, of the 1st Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, and belonging to Bamber Bridge, on the same train. He had been taking prisoners down to the Cape, and was returning to Kimberley to rejoin his regiment. The unexpected meeting was recorded by the camera.

A COCKINGTON FIREMAN.

MEMORIAL TABLET.

Mr George SANDERS, who volunteered for service with the Yeomanry Hospital at Deelfontein, with other members of the Cockington Fire Brigade, and who died at Maitland Camp, near Capetown, in November of last year, was a man so well respected by the people of Cockington that they felt a tablet should be placed in the Parish Church to his memory. The money was quickly raised without the slightest difficulty, and on Saturday evening the tablet was placed in the old parish church of Cockington. The inscription ran: “For remembrance before God. George S. Sanders, Private in the Imperial Yeomanry Staff. He died at Maitland, Cape Colony, November 27th, 1900, and was buried at Woodstock Cemetery, Cape Town. Out of the five members of the Cockington Fire Brigade who volunteered for service in the South African War he was the only one who did not come home again”.
